54-B District Court expands payment options

Beginning Dec. 1, 2014, East Lansing 54-B District Court customers will have the benefit of paying with American Express and Discover cards, in addition to VISA and MasterCard.

Under the new payment processing system with PayGOV, all amounts due for public fines may be paid online. Partial and installment payments are also allowed under the new system.
Prior to Dec. 1, customers have been limited to payment in full for unpaid parking and traffic tickets and online payments could not be accepted for misdemeanor cases.
Payment receipts will be available by text or email. Customers may still make a payment in person at the court and receive a receipt for payment on their smart phone.
A convenience fee of 3 percent will be charged for all credit card transactions over $33, including payments made in person. Transactions under $33 will be charged $1. The fee is paid directly to PayGOV. The court does not retain the convenience fee.
Customers who wish to avoid payment of the convenience fee may pay by check or cash. Three secure drop boxes are available outside the courthouse for cash and check payments during times when the court is closed.
With the new payment system, the court expects to realize savings of nearly $50,000 each year for credit card transactions.
Customers wishing to pay with VISA and MasterCard prior to Dec. 1 may avoid the new convenience fee.
