Douglas Shapiro to receive MDTC award at 'Past Presidents' meeting Shapiro's Third District bench seat includes Jackson County

Long-time member of the local legal community and now Michigan Court of Appeals judge for the Third District which includes Jackson County, Douglas Shapiro is being honored by the Michigan Defense Trial Counsel (MDTC) it has been announced.

Shapiro has been named to receive the MDTC's President's Special Recognition Award at the organization's annual gathering of past presidents on Nov. 3 at 6 p.m. at the Baronette Hotel in Novi.

MDTC noted that current officers, board of directors, section chairs and regional chairs will join the MDTC's past presidents at the event and to honor Shapiro.

Judge Shapiro was born in 1954 in New York City and came to Michigan in 1972. He earned a bachelor's degree in history with high distinction from the University of Michigan in 1983, and a law degree, cum laude, from the University of Michigan Law School, in 1986. Following law school, he served as a law clerk to Justice James Brickley of the Michigan Supreme Court from 1986 thru 1989.

From 1989-1990 he was an assistant at the State Appellate Defenders Office in Detroit providing appellate counsel to indigent criminal defendants. In 1991, he began trial practice specializing in personal injury litigation and became a partner in the firm of Muth and Shapiro, PC, in 1995 in Ypsilanti, where he continued civil trial and appellate practice through his appointment on Feb. 2, 2009, as a judge on the Michigan Court of Appeals.

The MDTC is the statewide association of attorneys representing the defense in civil litigation.
