MLK Diversity Committee thanks supporters

The Jackson County Chamber of Commerce, Jackson County Intermediate School District and the Jackson Human Relations Commission have partnered to create the MLK Diversity Committee which provides the Middle School Challenge Project for Jackson county middle school students and hosts an annual breakfast to honor Martin Luther King, Jr.

At the core of the Middle School Challenge Project is participation in a Challenge Day. The program assists students in transforming their schools into places where every child feels safe, loved and celebrated by inspiring youth to “be the change they want to see” and giving them the tools and confidence to help stop bullying and alienation in their schools.

Challenge Day 2014 will be November 3, 4, 5, and 6 at the Lily Missions Center. After the program, a group of students from each school will be encouraged to identify projects and activities for their schools that will reinforce the lessons learned at Challenge Day. School personnel and community volunteers facilitate the student selected projects.

The annual MLK Diversity Breakfast will be on Friday, Jan. 16, 2015 from 7:30-9 a.m. at Gene Davis & Sons with keynote speaker Paula Diane Cunningham, president and CEO of Capitol National Bank.

The mission of the MLK Diversity Breakfast Committee is to “Encourage community collaboration to reflect Dr. King’s dream and to motivate youth for service and excellence.”

The Committee would like to thank the following grantors who have come forward with funds to support the 2014 Middle School Challenge Project: MIS Cares Foundation, Proceeds from 2014 MLK Diversity Breakfast (including Title Sponsor The Men of Cooper Street Correctional Facility Prisoner Benefit Fund), Kiwanis Club of Jackson, Jackson College Foundation, Jackson Community Foundation, Western School District, Comcast, Dawn Foods Foundation, Northwest Community Schools, United Way of Jackson County (Individual donor designations), Baker College, Vandercook Lake Public Schools, Columbia Schools, Concord Schools, CP FederalCredit Union, Jon Hart, Culver’s Donation Boxes.

Anyone interested in providing additional financial support or volunteering as an adult facilitator for the 2014 program are encouraged to contact the Jackson County Chamber of Commerce at 517/782-8221.
