Judge orders road rage killing case to trial

HOWELL (AP) — A judge has ordered 69-year-old man to stand trial for murder in a case of alleged road rage in Livingston County.

Derek Flemming was shot in the head in September after getting out of his vehicle to ask Martin Zale about his aggressive driving. It happened in Genoa Township, 45 miles northwest of Detroit.

District Court Judge Carol Sue Reader ruled following a hearing last Friday that there is probable cause to send the case to Circuit Court. Flemming’s wife testified at the hearing about seeing him collapse after being shot.

Zale remains jailed without bond. An arraignment is expected in Circuit Court in the coming weeks.

Defense lawyer Melissa Pearce has said she will argue self-defense. She says “the whole story has not been told.”

Spending on TV ads in governor’s race soars

LANSING (AP) — A campaign finance watchdog says $47.6 million was spent on TV ads in the Michigan governor’s race.

The Michigan Campaign Finance Network says Democratic challenger Mark Schauer’s campaign and his allies spent $3.3 million airing ads.

Republican Gov. Rick Snyder’s successful re-election campaign and his allies spent $7.7 million.

The biggest spenders were the Democratic Governors Association, at $15.4 million, and the Republican Governors Association, at $10.4 million.

The Michigan Campaign Finance Network says the $36.6 million spent on TV ads by outside groups was about double the previous record of $18 million spent in the 2006 campaign between Democratic Gov. Jennifer Granholm and Republican Dick DeVos.

The Detroit Free Press and The Detroit News report the $47.6 million was second to the $54 million spent in the 2006 race.

Thousands raised for men cleared in murder

CLEVELAND (AP) — Thousands of dollars have been raised to help two men who have been exonerated in a 1975 Cleveland slaying after decades in prison.

WKYC-TV in Cleveland reports  donations on public crowd-funding Web pages for 57-year-old Ricky Jackson and 60-year-old Wiley Bridgeman totaled more than $25,000 in just a few days.

Jackson and Bridgeman were released from jail Friday after a judge dismissed the cases against them.

The dismissals came after the key witness in the case — a then-13-year-old boy — recanted his testimony last year.

Jackson's GoFundMe fundraiser page had raised more than $26,000 as of Sunday.

Bridgeman's page raised more than $600.

The pages were set up by the Ohio Innocence Project and Ohioans to Stop Executions to help the men rebuild their lives.
