'Blurred Lines' case examined

The Midwest Chapter of the Copyright Society of the USA and the Arts, Communications, Entertainment, & Sports Section of the State Bar of Michigan this month presented “A Clear View of ‘Blurred Lines’” at the University of Detroit Mercy School of Law. Speaking at the event were Tom Leavens (second from left), partner in Chicago-based Leavens, Strand, & Glover LLC and adjunct professor at Northwestern University School of Law and at the S.J. Quinney College of Law at the University of Utah; and Judith Finell (second from right), president of New York-based music consulting firm Finell Music Services Inc. who was the testifying musicologist for the Marvin Gaye estate in the case. On hand to present the speakers were program co-chair and Detroit Mercy Law Prof. Howard Abrams (far left) and program chair Richard Herman (far right) of Richard A. Herman PC.  “There was a controversial $7.3 million decision that came down between the heirs of Marvin Gaye and Pharrell Williams and Robin Thicke,” Herman said of the “Blurred Lines” case.  “We’re going to be talking about copyright law as it pertains to music in general but also how it pertained to that case and what, if any, implications that case has on the future of music production.”
