Judge enters plea in hit-and-run crash case
ROSEVILLE (AP) — A Macomb County judge has pleaded no contest to failing to stop at the scene of an accident where someone was injured.
The Wayne County prosecutor’s office says Roseville’s 39th District Court Judge Catherine Steenland also entered the same plea Friday for failing to report an accident. Both charges are misdemeanors.
A no-contest plea isn’t an admission of guilt, but is treated as such for sentencing.
The hit-and-run crash occurred in 2017 in Roseville. A 31-year-old man said a woman in a red sedan hit his car and drove away.
The Macomb Daily reported that Steenland was on medical leave at the time.
The case was handled by the Wayne County prosecutor’s office after Macomb County authorities recused themselves.
Steenland will be sentenced Nov. 30.
Engler: Fraud took some money in Nassar fund
EAST LANSING (AP) — Michigan State University’s interim president says about half of $1.1 million distributed for counseling for victims of former sports doctor Larry Nassar has gone to people trying to defraud the school.
John Engler said Friday the $10 million Healing Assistance Fund is “deeply troubled” and isn’t expected to distribute any more money for three to four months.
Payments stopped this summer after its administrator flagged the fraudulent claim issue. Engler said several people are under investigation and the school has terminated a vendor’s contract.
Officials say none of the fraudulent claims were made by anyone who filed complaints against Nassar.
Nassar worked for Michigan State and USA Gymnastics, which trains Olympians. He is imprisoned for molesting athletes and possessing child pornography.
Blowtorch used to kill spiders may have started house fire
FRESNO, Calif. (AP) — Authorities say a man apparently set a home on fire while using a blowtorch to kill spiders.
KFSN-TV reports 29 firefighters were called to a Fresno housing development Tuesday night to put out a two-alarm blaze.
Authorities say a man was house-sitting for his parents when he tried to kill black widow spiders with a blowtorch. He got out safely, but the home’s attic and second story were damaged.
Although the exact cause of the blaze is under investigation, firefighters believe the blowtorch was to blame.
Fresno firefighters tweeted, “Please don’t use a blowtorch to kill spiders.”
Passenger says bus driver lost for hours during trip to NYC
CLEVELAND (AP) — A passenger says a Greyhound bus driver on a trip to New York City got lost in Cleveland and drove in circles for several hours before returning to the city’s terminal.
WOIO-TV reports Arin Choo says he and other passengers began asking the driver questions Tuesday night when they noticed seeing the same sights over and over again. Choo says the driver eventually conceded he was lost and returned to the Cleveland bus terminal where he dropped off two passengers he claimed were disruptive.
Choo says the passengers were just trying to be helpful and wondered why the driver didn’t have GPS.
The bus arrived in New York City around noon Wednesday, 4 ½ hours late.
