Legal assistance clinic marks anniversary

The University of Detroit Mercy School of Law, Miller Canfield and the Oakland County Bar Association recently celebrated the first anniversary of the Federal Pro Se Legal Assistance Clinic during the Pro Se Clinic Soiree at Miller Canfield’s Detroit offices. The clinic, located at the Theodore Levin U.S. Courthouse in Detroit, opened in January 2018, offering legal assistance to low-income citizens representing themselves in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Michigan. The clinic is staffed by Detroit Mercy Law and operates with the support of the district court, as well as multiple community partners. On hand for the celebration to raise funds for the clinic were (left to right) Gerald Gleeson of Miller Canfield, Detroit Mercy Law graduate DaiChanai Jones, Detroit Mercy Law Clinical Coordinator Rebecca Nowak, U.S. District Court Judge Victoria Roberts, Detroit Mercy Law Director of Clinical Programs Prof. Nick Schroeck, U.S. District Court Chief Judge Denise Page Hood, Detroit Mercy Law Dean Phyllis Crocker, Wendy Richards of Miller Canfield, Clinic Director Kevin Carlson, and Detroit Mercy Law Prof. Anne Yantus.
