Leaders back proposal to expand regional transit

DETROIT (AP) — Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan, two county executives and a commissioner from Washtenaw County say they support proposed legislation that could lead to expanding regional transit.

Revisions to Michigan’s Municipal Partnership Act would allow Detroit and Wayne, Oakland and Washtenaw counties to enter into a transit agreement prior to a ballot proposal for a property tax increase. The bill is pending before the House Transportation committee.

Duggan, Washtenaw Commission Chair Jason Morgan, Wayne and Oakland executives Warren Evans and Dave Coulter say they back the proposal which is pending before a House committee.

If approved, Wayne, Washtenaw, Oakland and Detroit would be able to work with a regional authority to negotiate a partnership. Macomb County could join later.

A tax for a regional transportation plan narrowly was voted down in 2016.

Life sentence affirmed in drug-related death

KALAMAZOO (AP) — An appeals court has upheld a life sentence for a man who was blamed for the drug-related death of another man in the Kalamazoo area.

The federal court says the sentence is “severe and perhaps even misguided as a matter of criminal justice policy” but still constitutional.

Steve Whyte was accused of providing heroin that caused the fatal overdose of Adam Boomers in 2016. He denied the allegation and claimed he was set up by a different drug dealer in the Kalamazoo area.

The government’s trial witnesses included a man who said he served as the conduit between Whyte and Boomers.

Prior convictions enhanced Whyte’s sentence in federal court.

Regulators stop sale of Montana mine waste ‘Bag O’Slag’

HELENA, Mont. (AP) — Environmental regulators have put a halt to a Montana business association’s sale of sandwich bags of mining waste advertised as a “Bag O’Slag.”

Environmental Protection Agency officials overseeing the Superfund cleanup of pollution from decades of smelter operations in Anaconda came across the potentially toxic tchotchkes for sale by the city’s chamber of commerce. The slag contains small amounts of arsenic and lead.

Mary Johnston, the chamber’s executive director, said the chamber sold up to 40 bags a summer for $2 apiece.

Always doe prices? Deer wanders into Walmart, slips around

WOOSTER, Ohio (AP) — A whitetail went retail for a bit when it entered a Walmart store in Ohio.

Patrons in Wooster say the deer was kicking shelves as it walked through the store one day last week.

Bert and Dawn Moore encountered the deer after stopping in for a few things for dinner. Bert Moore told the Wooster Daily Record he feared the doe was in
danger of hurting itself or others.

Moore says he grabbed the deer when it grew tired after slipping on the floor and then lay on it to keep it still.

He, another shopper and store employees helped the animal get out. It disappeared into a field.
