Legal Aid and Defender Association's Metro Justice for Survivors Partnership awarded funding

Legal Aid and Defender Association Inc. (LAD) has announced that its Metro Justice for Survivors Partnership – Legal Assistance for Victims project has received renewed and additional funding.

In 2017, Legal Aid and Defender was first awarded a grant to provide comprehensive legal services to help survivors of domestic/dating violence, sexual assault and staking grant from the U.S. Department of Justice Office on Violence against Women.

The project focuses on providing holistic, comprehensive legal services that help survivors achieve personal and family safety, and regain their independence and sense of self.

Other key components of the project are partnerships and specialized training. In the project, LAD partners with domestic and sexual violence service providers First Step, YWCA Interim House, SASHA Center and Team Wellness Center to integrate advocacy and legal services. There also is a focus on specialized training for legal staff and project partners on providing services that are trauma-informed, survivor centric and designed to empower survivors.

In addition to its renewal grant from the Department of Justice, LAD has also been awarded a grant from the Community Foundation for Southeast Michigan.

This additional funding will help bridge the gap between the legal services available and the need of survivors.

President and CEO Nicole Goodson indicated that “the need for attorneys to represent survivors was already great, and has been exacerbated by the current global pandemic which has forced many survivors to shelter in place with their abusers.”

The Community Foundation for Southeast Michigan is a philanthropic organization that supports a wide variety of activities benefitting education, arts and culture, health, human services, community development, and civic affairs.

Since its inception, the Foundation has distributed more than $1.1 billion through more than 74,000 grants to nonprofit organizations throughout Wayne, Oakland, Macomb, Monroe, Washtenaw, St. Clair, and Livingston counties.

Legal Aid and Defender Association’s mission is to provide holistic, innovative legal services that improve the quality of life and empower vulnerable and underserved individuals, families, and communities.
