In Memoriam: Muskegon attorney Richard P. Tolle, III 1953-2016

Well-liked and highly respected local attorney Richard “Rick” Perry Tolle, III, age 63, passed away unexpectedly Friday, April 1. Rick was born Jan. 27, 1953 in Champaign, Illinois to Richard P. and Dorothy Tolle. Rick is survived by his new bride, Linda Wood. Rick and Linda recently began a renewed life together, after celebrating their nuptials in Florida on New Year’s Eve. Memories and appreciation of a loving, devoted and loyal father are shared by daughters Demetria (Nick) Friberg, Harmony (John) VanValkenberg, Sarah (Bryan) Fregeau and Katie Tolle. Grandchildren Natalie and Elyse Friberg and Ethan and Jack VanValkenberg have also been blessed with Rick as a part of their life.
 
Rick shared 31 wonderful years with wife Renee (Bishoff) Tolle, together raising their four daughters, who passed away on Jan. 20, 2012. Rick is also survived by his mother Dorothy (Dottie) Tolle, brother Gary Tolle, sister Margaret McFarren and adoring nieces and nephews. He was preceded 
in death by father Richard P. Tolle II, sister Linda Tolle and brother David Tolle. Rick was blessed with so many special friends it is impractical to provide a list.

Rick graduated from Muske-gon High School in 1971. Rick worked as a paralegal for Legal Aid of Western Michigan for 22 years before returning to Thomas M. Cooley law school, graduating in May, 2000. Rick was a long-time member of the Muskegon Landlord Associa-tion, V.F.W Don Rea Post 8846, Unity Church where he sang in the choir, and a member of the Muskegon County Bar Asso-ciation. As a member of the Muskegon real estate and legal communities, Rick touched hundreds of lives with his compassion to support others. 

Rick was well-known for his generous hours of pro bono work assisting area veterans in need of legal advice.  His kindness, courtesy, and compassion for our nation’s veterans was admired by many of his associates in the legal community.

Rick’s family welcomes visitors on Saturday April 9 from 1 to 3 p.m., with funeral services immediately following at Unity Church of Muskegon, 2052 Bourdon St. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to Spectrum Health Foundation to benefit stoke research. Donations can be sent to Spectrum Health Foundation, 100 Michigan Street, MC 004, Grand Rapids, MI 49503.
