Muskegon County Veteran Affairs wants to help veterans collect benefits

The Muskegon County Department of Veteran Affairs wants to connect with veterans in Muskegon and Ottawa counties who may have benefits available to them that they are not currently claiming.

“There are too many Veterans and widows of Veterans who are unaware that they may be eligible for benefits,” said Muskegon County Veterans Affairs Manager Mike Baauw. “It is our duty to the Veterans and the widows of Veterans explore eligibility, and then, if eligible, apply for the benefits.”

Available federal benefits include healthcare, including mental health; home loans; insurance; pensions and retirement; education; vocational rehabilitation and employment; and burial and memorial benefits, among others. At the state level in Michigan, benefits may include financial assistance with income taxes, property taxes, vehicle registration fees, and emergency expenses, in addition to others for those who are permanently and totally disabled. The Muskegon Department of Veteran Affairs is also able to provide emergency assistance for smaller expenses.

Veterans of all branches of the U.S. military, including reservists and National Guard members, their spouses, and dependents could be eligible for benefits. Typically, service members must have been honorably
discharged to qualify for benefits, and there are additional eligibility requirements for spouses and dependents.

“Every Veteran and widow of Veteran should have a discussion with a Veteran Service Officer regarding potential Veterans benefits available at no cost to them,” said Baauw. “We have four accredited Service Officers in our office, and we are ready to assist them.”

Veterans, their spouses, and dependents who are not currently collecting benefits may call the Muskegon County Department of Veteran Affairs at (231) 724-7143 for help in determining eligibility and applying for benefits.
