Inn of Court membership deadline is August 9
The deadline to apply for membership in the third season of the Washtenaw County American Inn of Court is Aug. 9.
The Inn of Court is sponsored by the Washtenaw County Bar Association, the Washtenaw Judiciary and the Thomas M. Cooley Law School, Ann Arbor campus. It is open to all WCBA members and offers a chance to work hand-in-hand with veteran attorneys and members of the Washtenaw County judiciary.
At the beginning of the season, the Inn membership for that year is divided into teams. Each team consists of one judge, several lawyers and two law students. Each team is responsible for putting on one one-hour program during the year.
Programs are pre-assigned by topic with teams following a basic fact pattern of a hypothetical case. A team might present on Best Tips for Direct and Cross Examination, The Latest in Electronic Discovery, Motions at Trial, or Effective Closing Argument, Mediation.
At the end of each program, the members of the Inn engage in open discussion of that night's topic and get to hear from top lawyers and judges on best practice and tips for success.
The Inn meets on the second Tuesday of the month from 6 to 7 p.m., September to May, typically in the local courtroom of the judge involved with that evening's program.
Costs are kept to a minimum and are as follows: Masters (15+ years experience) and barristers (5-15 years experience) participate at the rate of $100; associates (1-5 years experience) pay $75; and law students are free.
To participate, contact Kyeena Slater at slaterk@ewashtenaw.org or 734-994-4912.
