Lectures will showcase Jewish and American law

Michigan State University College of Law will host two lectures by Rabbi and Professor Samuel J. Levine, Director of the Jewish Law Institute at Touro College Jacob D.Fuchsberg Law Center, with receptions to follow each event.

Professor Levine will discuss Jewish law and the American legal system in a lecture titled, “From Talmud to Constitution: The Comparative Evolution of Legal Systems.”

Both events are open to the public; reservations can be made at www.law.msu.edu/advancement/beznos-lecture.html.

The lecture is sponsored by the Beznos Family in memory of Fay and Samuel Beznos.

One of the world’s foremost experts on the interplay of Jewish and American law, Levine has articles published in numerous national and international law reviews, and his scholarship appears in textbooks and anthologies around the world.

“For the past six years, and continuing in the future, my vision for Touro’s Jewish Law Institute has been to explore ways the Jewish legal experience can shed light on American law, American legal practice, and American legal education,” said Professor Levine. He has assisted professors across the country in developing courses on the topic, and in the process, Professor Levine formed friendships with members of the MSU Law faculty including Professors Brian Kalt and Frank Ravitch.

“I was excited to hear MSU Law wanted to host these lectures and to have the opportunity to discuss the topic with the general public,” he said.

“I look forward to getting to know the community, both at the law college and the broader Detroit area.”

The first lecture will take place from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, June 23  at the Jewish Community Center of Metropolitan Detroit, 6600 W. Maple Road, West Bloomfield Township, and will feature a special guest -
Michigan Supreme Court Justice Stephen Markman, who will offer closing remarks.

The second lecture will take place at MSU Law, 648 N. Shaw Lane, East Lansing, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday,  June 29.

Refreshments and conversation with Levine will follow at both receptions.
