Big Brothers Big Sisters of Washtenaw County will hold its annual fundraising event, Bowl For Kids Sake, from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday, March 20 and Saturday, March 23 at Revel and Roll, 1950 S Industrial Hwy, Ann Arbor, MI 48104. The March 23 timeslots are 11:30 to 1:30 p.m., 1:45 to 3:45 pm, or 4 to 6 pm.
This fun-filled event of bowling and games, with no special skills needed, is an opportunity to join together and make a difference in the lives of at-risk youth. Several attorneys and legal personnel have taken part in this event over the years, said Ann Arbor attorney Shayla Fletcher who serves on the BBBS board, led a bowling team last year and who is spearheading her team this year.
“BBBS is proven to decrease risky behaviors in children which has a direct correlation to their likelihood to end up in the juvenile system,” Fletcher said.
Last year, the organization matched and supported 364 kids with volunteer mentors. The funds raised during Bowl For Kids Sake will be used to support existing matches and recruit new mentors to serve the more than 150 children on the waiting list. Some boys have been waiting more than a year.
BBBS started when a New York City children’s court clerk recognized more and more boys were appearing in his courtroom, and recognized caring adults could help many of these children stay out of trouble. Research proves children enrolled in Big Brothers Big Sisters programs are more likely to improve in school and in relationships with family and friends, and less likely to skip school or use illegal drugs or alcohol.
There are several levels of sponsorships for firms, and the organization also appreciates help in getting the word out about the need for mentors and donors.
