Jackson to celebrate Michigan Adoption Day on Nov. 21

 Michigan Adoption Day, an event jointly sponsored by the Michigan Supreme Court and the Michigan Department of Human Resources (DHS), will take place on Friday, Nov. 21, at the Jackson County Courthouse.  Circuit Judge Richard N. LaFlamme will preside over adoption hearings from 9 to 10 a.m. and Probate Judge Diane M. Rappleye will preside over adoption hearings from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. There will be a reception following each adoption with entertainment for the children along with gift bags.  Supreme court Justice Stephen J. Markman will be present to help celebrate this honorable tradition. 

With assistance from local DHS offices and private adoption agencies, other Michigan Courts will finalize adoptions on the Tuesday before Thanksgiving, hold celebrations for adoptive families, and provide information about the adoption process. 
Because Michigan Adoption Day is so close to Thanksgiving, the theme is “Giving Thanks for Families.” It is hoped Michigan Adoption Day will bring the adoption process to the public’s attention, encourage more adoptions, and provide more children with safe and loving homes. 
Last year over 58,000 children in the U.S. foster care system were adopted, but currently, there are 397,000 children in foster care; approximately, 101,000 are legally freed for adoption and are waiting for a “forever family.”
