The Jackson City Council met on Oct. 26. Highlights include:
• The City Council approved the purchase of three new patrol cars for the Jackson Police Department and one vehicle for police administration to use.
• Tax incentives were passed by the City Council for the new apartment development taking shape at the former Allen School on E. Pearl Street and a mixed-use development that’s nearing completion on W. Michigan Avenue.
• A Living Wage Ordinance was voted down by the council. If passed, the ordinance would have required some City contractors to pay their employees a specified wage.
• A proposal to create an Affordable Housing Development Authority was considered by the council and was postponed until the next meeting in Nov. The proposal calls for allocating $3.5 million in American Rescue Plan funds to promote and oversee affordable housing efforts in the City.
• The permits to hold the 2022 Hot Air Jubilee and 2021 Downtown Jackson Christmas Parade were both approved by the council.
• The Electric Vehicle Charging Ordinance is now going to the Environmental Commission for further review after a vote from the council.
