Twelve youngsters worked in Save Our Youth summer work program

This summer, Save Our Youth employed 12 youth to work with community partners that assigned each teen to handle responsibilities while learning about the agency, with hopes this will set up a future path. The program ran June 13 to July 29.

The “interns” worked one day a week for 3 hours earning $75 a week for 6 weeks.  At the end of each workweek, interns met at the Save Our Youth office to discuss what they learned. Sheila Everts, True Community Education Ambassador, spent four of the six weeks with the interns, teaching them financial responsibility.

On payday, interns submitted their timesheet including a written report describing what work they had performed. They also learned to write a 2-week notice letter explaining they will be leaving the workplace to return to school in the fall.

Community partners included Henry Ford Health, Jackson District Library, Family Services and Children's Aid, American 1 Community Center, Jackson Community Foundation, Jackson County Chamber of Commerce, True Community Credit Union, Ella Sharp Museum, Jackson County Sheriff, Jackson County YMCA, and Michigan Military Heritage Museum.
