Wins by Panthers moves C-S over .500


A two-run walk off single by pinch hitter  Kasey Carman in the bottom of the sixth inning gave the Climax-Scotts varsity baseball team a 2-1 win over Union City in the second game of a doubleheader and a split in the twinbill.

Union City won the first game 13-1 in five innings.

The split sent C-S into a home game against Athens April 16 with a 3-2 record.

Gavin Eyre started the sixth inning rally in the second game against Union City with a walk. Ben Crocker singled, pushing Eyre to third base following a Charger error on the play.

Carter Dzwik popped out to the shortstop, setting the stage for Carman’s heroics.

After fouling off four pitches, the C-S freshman singled to left field for the game winning hit.

Tyler Smith earned the win in relief, firing two-thirds of an inning without giving up a hit. He walked one batter and struck out one.  C-S was limited to just one hit in the first game, a double by Ben Crocker.

Starting pitcher Gavin Eyre, who did not allow a hit in one and two-third innings of work, struggled with control issues, allowing five walks. He struck out four Chargers.

C-S Sweeps Tekonsha

Two Climax-Scotts pitchers combined on a no hitter in the first game and three Panthers teamed up to throw a three-hitter in the second game, helping C-S to a pair of wins over Tekonsha April 9 at C-S High School.

Starting and winning pitcher Jacob Sheets allowed no hits, two walks and struck out two and Tyler Smith tossed two scoreless innings with no walks and three strikeouts in a 10-0 C-S win in the first game.

Ben Crocker pitched the first inning in the second game to earn the win in a 19-3, three-inning game. Lincoln Dzwik and Carter Dzwik both pitched one inning and did not allow a hit. Both St. Phil players playing with C-S on a co-op arrangement, struck out two and did not allow a walk.

Two hits including a double and two RBI off the bat of Logan Gilbert led C-S in the first game.

Ben Crocker had two hits, including a double, and two RBI to lead C-S in the second game.

C-S golf team falls to Union City


The Climax-Scotts golf team suffered a 194-210 loss to Union City April 8 at Riverside Golf Club. Carter Pio’s 48 was low score for C-S.

Jackson Bagwell, with a 53, Cole Curtis, with a 54, and Ryan Pejakovich, with a 55, rounded out C-S’ scoring.

C-S is scheduled to face Hillsdale Academy April 29 at The Hills of Baw Beese at 4 p.m.

C-S JV baseball team drops 2


The Climax-Scotts JV baseball team suffered a pair of setbacks to Galesburg-Augusta April 15, 8-6 and 11-4.  C-S enjoyed an early 3-1 lead in the first game, but a six-run fifth inning pushed the Rams in front for good.

Ben Nelson, who had a double, produced half of C-S’ hit total in the opener.  Tyler Smith suffered the loss in relief of starter Ben Nelson. Smith allowed one earned run in two-thirds of an inning, issuing five walks with one strikeout. Nelson pitched the first four innings and gave up one earned run but added seven strikeouts.

The Panthers managed just one hit in the second game, a fourth inning single by Kai Brown.

Hunter Piper suffered the loss, allowing seven earned runs and six walks over the first two and one-third innings.

Rain keeps C-S softball team idle


The Climax-Scotts softball team was scheduled to resume action April 11 for the first time since the season opener April 8, but instead was sidelined for eight days after the team had a single game against Burr Oak April 11 and a doubleheader against Union City April 12 postponed because of rain and wet fields.

The 0-1 Lady Panthers, who returned to action April 17 in a single game against Athens, are scheduled to make the Burr Oak game up in a doubleheader April 30 at C-S at 4:30 p.m.  A make up date with Union City has not been determined.

C-S track teams performed well


The Climax-Scotts boys track team enjoyed six first place finishes and 34 personal records and the Lady Panthers had four first place finishes and eight personal records at the seven team Colon Dale Shook Invitational April 12.

No team scores were kept.

Miles Shannon, who placed first in three individual events and helped the 4x100-meter relay team to a first place finish, had four first place finishes to pace C-S.  Shannon won the 100-meter dash (11.47), high jump (5’10”), and long jump (17’09”).  He joined Jordan Grove, Luke Lawrence, and Chase VanMiddlesworth, for a first place finish on the 4x100-meter relay team that finished with a time of 46.78.

The 4x200-meter relay team, consisting Ryan DeHaan, Chase VanMiddlesworth, Maddox Wyman and Luke Lawrence placed first with a time of 1:40.28 and Chase VanMiddlesworth, with a time of 23.60, earned the other first place finish in the 200-meter dash.

Paige Amos, with a time of 13.68 in the 100-meter dash, and Addy Reeves, with a distance of 13’08” in the long jump, won individual competitions for the women.

C-S’ 4x100-meter relay team, consisting of Paige Amos, Sophie Braithwaite, Paige Fraley, and Lillie Edwards), placed first with a time of 57.69, and the same four helped the 4x200-meter relay team to a first place finish with a time of 2:04.39.
