Galesburg has been a special place for grand marshals of Greater Galesburg Day parade

Galesburg has been a great place to live, work and volunteer for Linda Carlton and Art Green.

The two will be recognized as grand marshals of the Greater Galesburg Day parade June 15 at 11 a.m.

The Greater Galesburg Day parade is sponsored by the Galesburg Augusta Business and Community Association (GABCA).

A 1965 graduate of Galesburg-Augusta High School, Carlton has been a lifelong resident of Galesburg.

Carlton has been a hair dresser for 59 years, including the last 29 years she has owned Sensations Salon in Galesburg.

The lifelong Galesburg resident not only helps senior citizens through her hair dresser business by making house calls, she also works with local funeral homes offering her hair dresser service for her customers one more time.

Carlton, who volunteers for GABCA, has served as the chairperson for Greater Galesburg Days approximately 30 years. The Galesburg woman, along with many other volunteers in the organization, have worked hard each year with fundraisers that allows the group to put on Greater Galesburg Days along with other community events.

GABCA also sponsors a trick or treat event for kids in the fall, Winter Wonderland in December, and an Easter Egg hunt in the spring for the kids.

“We try to keep everything free for the community. The only way we can put this on is by the fundraisers that we do,” said Carlton, who noted that a golf fundraiser in the summer provides a lot of the funding GABCA uses to put on the events throughout the year.

Both Green and Carlton said they are honored to be selected as parade grand marshals.

“It’s a big honor. I couldn’t do it without the people that help me with GABCA. We work together. You always have to have a chairperson and that seems to be me, but you have to have a good crew and I have that,” said Carlton.

A retired tool and dye maker for General Motors, Green has been a resident of Galesburg since 1969.

Green said he enjoys the small town atmosphere Galesburg offers and found it easy to get involved with the community and volunteer.

He has volunteered for the local Little League and Rocket Football programs and helped coach the G-A High School volleyball team approximately 30 years. Green also does some volunteering with GABCA.

Carlton and Green, who both had a son and a daughter go through the G-A School system, said the small town atmosphere has kept them in Galesburg.

“Everybody comes together to help with things like Greater Galesburg Days and some of the things we put on. Even when we have a tragedy it seems like we all pull together and support each other,” said Carlton.

The Greater Galesburg Days schedule appears above.
