C-S School Board expected to vote in August on co-op arrangement with St. Phil, Calhoun Christian in baseball

By Bruce Rolfe

After lengthy input from Climax-Scotts Athletic Director Tyler Langs, the C-S Board of Education will vote at the August 19 board meeting on a two-year co-op arrangement with Battle Creek St. Philip and Calhoun Christian for baseball.

Langs said currently the co-op arrangement with Battle Creek St. Philip is important because the school district has helped maintain healthy participation numbers for C-S in baseball, while Calhoun Christian has a lower number of students participating.

Langs said when there are three school districts involved in a co-op, the school district has to go through a process with the Michigan High School Athletic Association every two years requiring board action.

Because C-S just co-ops with Battle Creek St. Philip in softball, there is no requirement for board action.

He adds even without Calhoun Christian, C-S would still be Division 3 in baseball.

Langs also discussed the need to look at how the district generates revenue at athletic events.

He said with game officials in high demand, school districts have had to pay officials more. He said increasing pay for game officials became necessary after it was becoming difficult to get enough game officials to host an athletic event. He said officials charge $90 for basketball and $110 for football.

To help offset the higher game official pay, increasing ticket prices is something the local school district may want to consider.

There was also discussion charging for spring sports however because spring sports typically have low attendance, if there is an admission charge, attendance may become even smaller. Another option discussed was charging for parking.

Langs also asked the board to consider revamping its family pass pricing to help families that might have multiple children in sports.

Langs said some school districts have transitioned to GoFan, however he is against that option considering transaction fees are added, making the actual per ticket price higher.
