Red Mass

The University of Detroit Mercy School of Law conducted its 112th annual Red Mass on Tuesday, September 17, at Saints Peter and Paul Jesuit Church in Detroit. Michigan Court of Appeals Judge Michael J. Riordan (far right) led the Renewal of the Lawyer’s Oath of Commitment. Also taking part in the mass were (l-r) Wayne County Circuit Court Judge Catherine Heise, Detroit Mercy Law Student Bar Association President Maya Mourani, and Wayne County 38th District Court Judge Kathleen Galen. Red Mass is an occasion for judges, attorneys, civic leaders, and law students of all faiths to come together and pray for blessings and strength in the coming year’s work.  Detroit Mercy Law’s annual Red Mass dates back to 1877 when Detroit College, as the university was then known, began its first year with a mass at Saints Peter and Paul Church. The School of Law continued the tradition when it opened in 1912, again hosting the Red Mass on behalf of the Archdiocese of Detroit at Saints Peter and Paul through the present.
