Fastcase to transition to new platform Nov. 14

The legal research tool Fastcase — offered as a free benefit to all members of the State Bar of Michigan — is transitioning to a new platform this month. Now called vLex Fastcase, the upgraded interface allows the ability to search by content type across jurisdictions and includes a table of contents in documents linked directly to statutes, regulations, books, and journal articles.

Michigan attorneys are expected to be able to begin accessing the new platform on November 14, 2024. Members can then transfer any notes, folders, and favorites to the new platform. After 30 days, members will be taken directly to the vLex Fastcase page when they log in. Access to the existing Fastcase 7 service will be maintained for the time being, but eventually transfer entirely to the vLex Fastcase interface.

Access to the legal research tool remains the same: Simply log in to the online Member Area at michbar.org/MemberArea. It is listed under “Extras.”

Multiple resources are available to Michigan attorneys to help with the transition to vLex Fastcase:

• A webinar will be offered at 2 p.m. November 14, 2024, at https://dashboard.gotowebinar.com/webinar/4289407507768992601.

• A video with the same information as the webinar is available at https://vimeo. com/1015349671.

Documentary screening, panel discussion hosted by law school

Wayne State University Law?School will present an in-person free screening of the PBS documentary “Warrior Lawyers: Defenders of Sacred Justice” followed by a panel discussion on Wednesday, November 20, from 4 to 6 p.m. at Wayne Law’s Partrich Auditorium, 471 W. Palmer Ave. in Detroit

“Warrior Lawyers” is a one-hour PBS documentary that is timely and relevant given the country's current reckoning with racial inequity and systemic racism.  The panel after the film will feature the filmmaker, Audrey Geyer; Holly T. Bird, co-executive director of Title Track; and JoAnne Cook, appellate judge of the Grand Traverse Band of Ottawa and Chippewa Indians.

The program focuses on the stories of Michigan Native American lawyers, Tribal judges, and their colleagues who work with Native Nations, their citizens, and mainstream institutions to achieve healing and Sacred Justice.

For additional information about the film, visit www.warriorlawyers.org.  Anyone with questions about the screening and panel discussion may email Shannon Gaffney at gv8357@wayne.edu.
