Attorneys discuss impact of facial recognition settlement Jan. 17
The Criminal Defense Attorneys of Michigan (CDAM) will conduct the webinar “Impact of Facial Recognition Settlement on Criminal Defense” on Friday, January 17, from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
As a result of a settlement in Williams v. City of Detroit, the Detroit Police Department has made substantial changes to its policies governing facial recognition technology and eyewitness lineups. Those changes will likely affect the work of criminal defense attorneys who are representing individuals arrested by the Detroit Police Department. This session aims to educate defense lawyers on how the settlement might improve their ability to defend those individuals, as well as national trends in the police use of facial recognition.
The webinar will look at:
• The specifics of the settlement in Williams v. City of Detroit.
• Newly available Brady/Giglio material as a result of the settlement.
• How facial recognition technology works and is used nationwide by police departments.
Speaking at the webinar will be Ramis Wadood and Phil Mayor.
Wadood is a staff attorney at the ACLU of Michigan. He works on a range of issues but focuses on the ACLU’s immigrant rights, policing, and surveillance work. He was counsel for Robert Williams in Williams v. City of Detroit.
Phil Mayor is a senior staff attorney at the ACLU of Michigan. He litigates across a broad range of issues, including criminal legal reform, voting rights, racial justice, surveillance, and the Fourth Amendment, prison/prisoners’ rights, free speech, and religious liberties. He was also counsel for Robert Williams in Williams v. City of Detroit.

Women’s Bar Book Club to meet Jan. 6 via Zoom
The Women’s Bar Association (WBA), Oakland County region of the Women Lawyers Association of Michigan, will present its next Book Club online Monday, January 6, beginning at 6 p.m. via Zoom.
For the January meeting, the club will be discussing “A Quiet Life in the Country,” the first of the Lady Hardcastle mysteries by T. E. Kinsey. Set in Edwardian Gloucestershire, Lady Hardcastle and her lady’s maid, Florence Armstrong—former spies and now amateur sleuths—retire to the countryside for a quiet life, but murder seems to follow them wherever they go.
