The seventh annual Shapero Cup Moot Court Competition and Symposium was conducted Monday, February 17.  The competition was held in courtrooms at the Bankruptcy Court, and the Symposium was held at the Theodore Levin U.S. Courthouse in Detroit. U.S. District Court Judge Stephen J. Murphy III, Eastern District of Michigan, and Bankruptcy Court judges from throughout Michigan participated, as well as attorneys from the Detroit Metropolitan area. Teams of law students from law schools in Michigan, Kansas, Kentucky, Tennessee, and Ohio competed.  After the competition, experienced attorneys conducted a demonstration argument on the same fact pattern for the law students to observe. Participants in the demonstration argument were (l-r) Christopher Jones of Acclaim Legal Services PLLC; U.S. Bankruptcy Court Judge Lisa Gretchko, Eastern District of Michigan; and Karen Rowse-Oberle of Butler Rowse-Oberle PLLC. The Shapero Cup Moot Court Competition and Symposium are named in honor of retired Bankruptcy Court Judge Walter Shapero for his many years of outstanding service as a bankruptcy judge. The community raised a lot of money for the event which offers scholarships to the students to participate.
