The Jewish Bar Association of Michigan (JBAM) teams up with Partners Detroit for its first installment of “Law & Torah” on Monday, July 29, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at Platform18, 116 E. 7th St. in Royal Oak. Attendees can pitch their perfect referral to other attorneys and learn about giving preferential treatment to Jewish owned businesses. Rabbi Leiby Burnham will lecture. The Michigan Judicial Institute and will conduct the Juvenile Probation Officer/Caseworker Certification Examination on Thursday, August 1. The exam is now a computer-based application, however, applicants must still pre-register to take the exam for only one time slot: 9 a.m. to noon or 1 to 4 p.m. To register for the online exam, visit https://mjieducation.mi.gov and scroll down to “upcoming MJI events.”2
The Catholic Lawyers Society of Metropolitan Detroit will host a Summer Outing at Jimmy John's Field on Friday, August 2, beginning at 6 p.m. at Jimmy John's Field, 7171 Auburn Rd. in Utica. Oakland Mediation Center (OMC), an Oakland County mediation and conflict resolution training facility, invites legal professionals to Virtual Domestic Relations Training 2024. The 12- half day State Court Administrative Office (SCAO) approved Domestic Relations Training will be held August 6, 7, 8, 13, 14, 15, 20, 21, 22, 27, 28, 29, from 1 to 5 p.m. each day online via Zoom. The Taxation Section of the State Bar of Michigan will host a “Young Tax Lawyers Panel on Career Options in Tax” on Thursday, August 8, from 5:30 to 7 p.m. at Hazel’s, 1 Peabody St. in Birmingham. Attendees will hear from a panel of practitioners with varied roles in the world of tax. The Federal Bar Association, Eastern District of Michigan Chapter, will host its 2024 Bench/Bar Golf Outing on Thursday, August 8, at Northville Hills Golf Club, 15565 Bay Hill Drive in Northville. Registration begins at 8:30 a.m. followed by golf with a shotgun start at 9:30 a.m. Golf costs $850 per foursome and $225 per single golfer which includes golf and an early dinner. The National Association for Public Defense (NAPD) will present “We the Defenders” on Monday through Thursday, August 12-15, at Wayne State University, 471 W. Palmer Ave. in Detroit. The conference for public defense investigators, mitigation specialists, social workers, paralegals, and other core staff – all roles except attorneys – who play a critical role in defense-based work. The Alternative Dispute Resolution Section of the State Bar of Michigan will present a virtual seminar on “Restorative Justice Practices” Tuesday, August 13, from noon to 1:30 p.m. The online program will feature Belinda Dulin, executive director of The Dispute Resolution Center (DRC) which is charting a path in Michigan on the practice of restorative justice. The Michigan Judicial Institute (MJI), in collaboration with the Friend of the Court Bureau, will provide a virtual 20-hour “Friend of the Court Alternative Dispute Resolution Training” on August 13, 14, 15, 20, and 21, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. each day via Zoom. This virtual training meets SCAO’s training requirements for friend of the court staff to conduct facilitative and information-gathering conferences and friend of the court domestic relations mediation. The Prosecuting Attorneys Association of Michigan and the Juvenile Justice &?School Safety Training Project will host a online “Juvenile Legal Update” online Thursday, August 14, from noon to 1 p.m. via Zoom. The Justice for Kids & Communities Bill Package was signed into law on December 12, 2023. Prosecutors and assistant prosecutors are encouraged to attend the online update to review the major changes and how they may relate to their work. For judicial officers, this webinar will explore the nuances of termination of parental rights hearings, including the statutory grounds for the termination of parental rights, best interests of the child determinations, procedural issues, evidentiary standards, and trends in the case law. The Oakland County Bar Association will host a spring membership mixer with “Bar Night Out at Steven Lelli’s Inn on the Green” on Thursday, August 15, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Attendees can mix and mingle with members of the OCBA while enjoying a festive atmosphere, appetizers, and a cash bar.
