Patterson energizes kids for the Brooksie Way 5k Middle School Challenge

Oakland County Executive L. Brooks Patterson and AT&T officially kicked-off the Brooksie Way 5k Middle School Challenge (MSC) Tuesday at Hart Middle School in Rochester Hills. Patterson joined 180 seventh graders in the Hart Gymnasium as they participated in a stimulating flash mob dance centered on bullying and encouraging healthy active lifestyles.

Oakland County middle school students are welcome to participate in the MSC. Participants receive free race registration, training shirt and support for those ready for the Challenge. Registration is on a first-come first-served basis at CountYourSteps.com. The deadline to submit an application for the Challenge is Tuesday, Sept. 20, at noon.

"This program gives middle school kids an opportunity to participate in an official 5k walk or race," Patterson said. "It builds off the Count Your Steps program started in 2004 and continues to enforce the county's effort to combat childhood obesity."

The Brooksie Way Half Marathon is Oakland County's premier road race and takes place this year on Sunday, Oct. 2. There is also a 5k race and One Mile Fun Run on the grounds of Oakland University. You may walk or run any of the events. Proceeds from the race support local programs that promote healthy, active lifestyles through Brooksie Way MiniGrants. More information on the races can be found at TheBrooksieWay.com.

The Challenge is made possible through the generous support of AT&T.
