Justices reappoint Grant as chief judge
Oakland Circuit Judge Nanci J. Grant was reappointed chief judge of the Oakland County Circuit Court for a two-year term effective January 1, 2012. The appointment was announced by the Michigan Supreme Court. Grant is currently nearing completion of her first term as chief judge of the Circuit Court.
Grant was elected to the circuit bench in 1996 and was the youngest woman ever elected to a Michigan circuit court.
Grant has served in several leadership positions within the judiciary. She was appointed presiding judge of the General Jurisdiction Division of the Circuit Court in 2000. In 2006 she was elected president of the Michigan Judges Association which represents this state's circuit and appellate judges. Grant currently serves as a member of the Executive Board of the Michigan Judges Association.
In 2006 Grant was elected to the Judicial Tenure Commission by all the state's circuit judges. The Judicial Tenure Commission investigates complaints of alleged judicial misconduct. Grant currently serves as vice chairperson of the Judicial Tenure Commission.
Grant's current term as chief judge began on January 1, 2010. As chief judge she serves as the presiding officer and director of the administration of the court. Her responsibilities include supervising caseload management, court finances and court personnel, and she oversees the judicial and administrative work of the court.
Grant graduated from The University of Michigan, with honors, and Wayne State University Law School, serving as the director of the Wayne State University Law School honors program. She worked as a private practice attorney specializing in commercial litigation prior to her election to the Circuit Court bench.
