Federal bench to discuss 'Conducting Settlement or Trial in a Complex Case'

The Complex Commercial Litigation Committee of the Federal Bar Association, Eastern District of Michigan Chapter, will present the seminar "Conducting Settlement or Trial In A Complex Case - A Discussion with the Bench" on Monday, March 19, at 2 p.m. in Room 115 of the Theodore Levin U.S. Courthouse, 231 W. Lafayette Blvd. in Detroit. Jurists from the federal bench will discuss effective and practical approaches to the significant components of jury and bench trials in complex cases, including settlement strategies and, if settlement is not accomplished, expert witness presentation, jury instructions, voir dire, Daubert motions and other motions in limine, and the handling of questions by jurors. For the first panel discussion, U.S. District Court Chief Judge Gerald E. Rosen and Magistrate Judge Mark A. Randon will be joined by Layn R. Phillips to discuss effective techniques and the unique issues faced in trying to settle complex cases. Phillips is a former United States attorney and U.S. District Court judge. He resigned from the federal bench in 1991, and frequently serves as a mediator in complex civil litigation. The second panel discussion will feature U.S. District Court Judges Denise Page Hood, Arthur Tarnow, and John C. O'Meara to discuss issues relating to jury and bench trials in complex litigation as discussed above. Following the seminar, a reception will take place at the Westin Book Cadillac Hotel.
