Judge will hear appeal over forced medication

MARQUETTE, Mich. (AP) -- A federal judge has suspended an order allowing the forced medication of a mentally ill man who is charged with placing a bomb outside a Detroit federal building. Judge R. Allan Edgar says he'll hear an appeal on May 7 in federal court in Marquette. A magistrate judge had given the green light to prison officials in Butner, N.C., to medicate Gary Mikulich, who has declined to take medicine to improve his mental health. Mikulich is charged with leaving a tool bag with explosive components outside the McNamara Federal Building in Detroit last year. The case is filed in Detroit but the dispute over his mental health is hundreds of miles away in the Upper Peninsula because that's where the Kingsford man was arrested. Published: Tue, May 1, 2012
