The fourth annual Swing to Cure Diabetes Golf Outing to benefit the University of Michigan Comprehensive Diabetes Center and the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation will take place Monday, May 21, at the U-M Golf Course with an 11 a.m. shotgun start.
The outing includes 18 holes of golf, a boxed lunch, dinner, prizes, gifts and a live and silent auction. Expected to attend are former University of Michigan football coaches Lloyd Carr, Gary Moeller and Jerry Hanlon.
All proceeds from the event benefit Type 1 Diabetes research. The Swing to Cure event has raised more than $164,000.
Swing to Cure Diabetes was founded by former University of Michigan football player and Varnum attorney Rich Hewlett and his wife, Chris. The couple felt urged to start raising money and awareness for juvenile diabetes after their son, Jeffrey, was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes 14 years ago.
Hewlett is a trial attorney who lives and works in Southeast Michigan. He has experience in construction law, business litigation and disputes, contracts and sports law.
Varnum is the lead sponsor of this year's Swing to Cure Diabetes event.
