Wrongful death suit filed in police confrontation case

DETROIT (AP) -- A federal lawsuit has been filed in last year's death of a suburban Detroit man after a confrontation with police. The Detroit News reported that the wrongful death lawsuit was filed in U.S. District Court on behalf of Mary Brady, a former Westland resident. Her 38-year-old son, Donald Murray, died July 30 after police were called to investigate whether he broke into a woman's home and attacked her. Police say Murray was out of control and needed to be restrained. He experiencing breathing problems and died. The city of Westland and several of its police officers are named in the lawsuit. It claims police used a stun gun on Murray and excessive force. Jim Fausone, Westland's city attorney, says officers followed procedures. He says a vigorous defense is planned.
