State Bar president and SBM Delegation to tour U.P.
Bruce Courtade, the new president of the State Bar of Michigan, will lead a contingent of SBM leaders on a tour of the Upper Peninsula legal community on Monday through Wednesday, Oct. 15-17. The annual tour gives U.P. bar associations, the media, and the public an opportunity to meet the person leading the State Bar during its 78th year. The tour will include stops in Sault Ste. Marie, Escanaba, Menominee, Iron Mountain, Ironwood, Houghton/Hancock, and Marquette.
Courtade, who was sworn in as SBM president on Sept. 20 in Grand Rapids, is a shareholder with Rhoades McKee PC in Grand Rapids where he focuses his practice on commercial litigation and construction law.
Courtade will lead an organization of more than 42,000 members that works to improve the administration of justice, promotes the legal profession, and builds public understanding of our legal system. Courtade has been involved in State Bar work for over a decade and has served on many of its committees and groups. He was chair of the State Bar Representative Assembly in 2000. He was elected to the SBM Board of Commissioners in 2004 and has served as treasurer, secretary, vice president, and president-elect. He is also a Fellow of the Michigan State Bar Foundation, a panelist for the Attorney Discipline Board, and a former recipient of the Bar's John W. Cummiskey Pro Bono Award (1991).
Courtade will be accompanied on the tour by newly-elected State Bar Representative Assembly Chair Dana Warnez. Warnez was first elected to the RA in 2005 and she represents the 16th Circuit. She served as chair of the District D Character and Fitness Committee from 2007-2009 and as a member from 2005-2007. She was also the representative liaison to the Law-Related Education and Public Outreach Committee's Building Lawyer Teacher Partnership Subcommittee.
Other members of the SBM delegation are SBM Executive Director Janet Welch, SBM Director of External Development Candace Crowley, and SBM Executive Coordinator Margaret A. Bossenbery.
