Symposium revisiting the American city

The 2012-2013 Wayne Law Review Symposium: "Revisiting the American City: A National Survey of Urban Legal Frameworks" will be conducted from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 2, at Wayne State University Law School, 471 W. Palmer in Detroit. The United States today is increasingly faced with a harsh reality--how can the city survive amid economic crisis, environmental concerns, suburban sprawl and increasing inequity? The Wayne Law Review hopes to answer this and other pressing questions with its annual symposium. No location is more fitting than the city of Detroit, which will serve as the "experimental lab" for discussion, and attendees will explore solutions from across the nation and globe as to which urban legal frameworks can guide the survival of the city. The keynote speaker will be Matt Cullen, COO and president of Rock Ventures, drawing on his experience with urban renewal in the city of Detroit and highlighting the importance of entrepreneurship in urban revitalization efforts. Other speakers include nationally recognized authors such as John Gallagher, Detroit Free Press reporter and author of "Reimagining Detroit," and Daniel P. Gilmartin, executive director of the Michigan Municipal League and author of "Economics of Place." Dennis Davin, executive director of Pennsylvania's Allegheny County Department of Economic Development, will present on the challenges and solutions faced by a national bellwether - the city of Pittsburgh. Megan Owens of Transportation Riders United will lead a discussion of public transit, while Adam Kutinsky of Detroit's Kitch Law will discuss pressing property issues. Providing an overview of a variety of federal lawmaking efforts, including the areas of urban planning and municipal financing, will be Don Borut, executive director of the National League of Cities, and Neha Bhatt, deputy director of Smart Growth America. These national leaders, as well as local legal practitioners, professors, experts, and students, will be in attendance to discover what solutions exist for urban policymakers and legal minds.
