State Bar of Michigan Annual Meeting set for Sept. 18-20 at Lansing Center
Members of the legal community will gather Sept. 18-20 at the Lansing Center in downtown Lansing for the State Bar of Michigan Annual Meeting and Solo and Small Firm Institute.
Among this year's highlights:
--Governor Rick Snyder will open the Annual Meeting with remarks at the State Bar of Michigan (SBM) Awards Banquet, beginning at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 18. State Bar members who have achieved the highest honors in the areas of leadership, professional integrity, and pro bono and community service will be recognized at the banquet, as will award winners from the Michigan State Bar Foundation, Michigan Defense Trial Counsel (MDTC), and Michigan Association for Justice (MAJ). Michigan Supreme Court Chief Justice Robert P. Young Jr., SBM President Bruce A. Courtade, SBM President-Elect Brian Einhorn, MDTC Immediate Past President Tim Diemer, and MAJ Immediate Past President Marc Lipton will present the awards.
--The Solo and Small Firm Institute will host a faculty of 20, including these national speakers:
* Carolyn Elefant, MyShingle.com.
* Barron K. Henley, Affinity Consulting Group LLC founding member.
* Roy S. Ginsburg, Roy S. Ginsburg JD.
* Janet K. Welch, State Bar of Michigan executive director.
These speakers will share their expertise about creating and growing solo law firms in the 21st century, using the latest technology for law practice automation, legal marketing ethics, achieving individualized practice goals and career satisfaction and more.
--On Thursday, Sept. 19, Lansing Mayor Virg Bernero has been invited to provide opening remarks at the Inaugural Luncheon. Michigan Supreme Court Chief Justice Robert P. Young Jr. will swear in the 79th president of the State Bar, Brian D. Einhorn, and other officers during the luncheon. In addition, Wayne County 36th District Court Judge Cylenthia LaToye Miller will swear in the 2013-2014 chair of the Representative Assembly, Kathleen M. Allen, and the Michael Franck and Unsung Hero awards will be presented at the assembly business meeting.
--Also on Thursday, the Celebrating Diversity Reception will take place from 6:30-8:30 p.m. in the upstairs room at Troppo in downtown Lansing. Hosted by the Justice Initiatives Committee, the reception will celebrate the rich diversity of the State Bar, and acknowledge the work accomplished over the past year in support of achieving greater diversity and inclusion in the legal profession in Michigan. The reception will feature a performance by the Ann Arbor-based all-lawyer band, Soultivity, a finalist in the American Bar Association's 2012 Battle of the All-Lawyer Bands.
--On Thursday and Friday, special educational presentations will take place in the vendor area, located in Exhibit Hall A in the Lansing Center. Casemaker, a tool provided to Michigan lawyers for free by the State Bar, will show lawyers how to save hundreds of dollars each month on legal research at 9 a.m. on both Thursday and Friday. Veracity Payment Solutions and Fan CONNECT will teach attorneys to utilize innovative mobile marketing solutions at 10:30 a.m. Thursday. The SBM Law and the Media Committee, featuring Pulitzer Prize winning former journalist and attorney Eric Freedman, will demonstrate how attorneys should work with the media at two sessions on Thursday, one starting at 3 p.m., and the other starting at 4 p.m. And Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan will teach attorneys how the Affordable Care Act will affect them at 10 a.m. on Friday.
--Also on Friday, the 50-Year Golden Celebration Luncheon will take place from noon-2 p.m. This event honors fellow lawyers being recognized for 50 years of membership in the State Bar of Michigan.
