Paralegal/Legal Assistant Section to meet, present scholarships, Sept. 20

The State Bar of Michigan Paralegal/Legal Assistant Section will present scholarships to three students and offer a seminar about the history of governmental immunity in Michigan law from 9 a.m. to noon on Friday, Sept. 20 at the SBM Annual Meeting at the Lansing Center. In a ceremony during its 9 a.m. business meeting, the section will present scholarships worth a total of $2,250. The recipients of this year's scholarships include Marilyn Feather, Heather Dawn Ungarten, and Cierra Griffin. This will be followed by the swearing in of the section board, including their incoming Chair Piper Smith, Chair-Elect Jennifer Petty, and Advisors Theresa Duddles and Felicia Rodriguez. Margaret A. Nelson, an assistant attorney general at the Michigan Department of Attorney General, will present a seminar on the history of governmental immunity as it evolved in common law and statute, and discuss significant case law that has shaped the application of immunity and exceptions. The SBM Paralegal/Legal Assistant Section originated in 1990 and provides education to its members through publications, seminars, and professional networking. It offers networking events, like an upcoming Meet & Greet they will be hosting in Grand Rapids this fall.
