Salute to Justice banquet honors judge, professor
The Oakland County Republican Party will present the 2013 Salute to Justice Banquet at the Somerset Inn, 2201 W. Big Beaver Road in Troy, on Thursday, Nov. 14, from 5:30 to 7:30 pm.
The Salute to Justice was created to recognize members of the legal or law enforcement community for their substantial contributions to Oakland County. Honorees for 2013 are Oakland County Circuit Court Judge Wendy Potts, a member of the court since 1997, recipient of the Lifetime Achievement Award, and Prof. David Moran, Distinguished Practitioner of the Year. Moran clerked at the U.S. Court of Appeals, worked for the State Appellate Defender Office, and taught a Wayne State University Law School. He also, along with Michigan Supreme Court Justice Bridget McCormack, launched the Michigan Innocence Clinic to litigate the claims with evidence of actual innocence by prisoners where DNA is available to exonerate them.
The Distinguished Service Award will be presented to the family of Mason James Samborski. Samborski was a public safety officer for the City of Oak Park killed in the line of duty on December 28, 2008. The Samborski murder has unfortunately resurfaced due to the recent Michigan Court of Appeals ruling that Michigan's law imposing life sentences on juvenile offenders is unconstitutional because it violates Article VIII by imposing "cruel and unusual punishment."
John Akouri, president and CEO of the Lebanese American Chamber of Commerce will serve as the Master of Ceremonies for the event.
A member of the Michigan Supreme Court will receive the John N. O'Brien Award for his contribution to the community.
Tickets for the event, which will include a chef-prepared banquet, may be purchased by visiting OCRP's secure website, www.oaklandgop.net or by contacting Dennis Pittman at 248-499-7288. Individual tickets are $150. Platinum and Silver Sponsorships, $1,200 and $500, include 8 or 2 tickets, recognition from the podium and on the OCRP website.
