Lathrup Village Council adds to its anti-bias law
LATHRUP VILLAGE (AP) -- The Lathrup Village City Council has voted to add sexual orientation and gender identity to its civil rights ordinance, banning discrimination against gay and transgender people in the Detroit suburb.
The council made the change at a meeting Monday night.
Michigan's civil rights law doesn't cover sexual orientation, making it legal to discriminate against gays in hiring, housing and public accommodations.
The Unity Michigan coalition says Lathrup Village is the 32nd Michigan municipality to outlaw anti-gay bias. The advocacy group says 10 other communities have adopted gay rights laws in the past year.
