Solo practice insights offered by grads

Thomas M. Cooley Law School recent graduates Alexander Benikov and Sarah Ostahowski spoke to a full audience of attorneys and law students about their success and trials of starting solo law practices during Cooley’s Solo By Design™ workshop.  The presentation was held at Cooley’s Lansing campus on June 6 and was simulcast live to Cooley’s four other campuses. Their presentations included candid conversation about the successes and trials of solo practice, featuring their prescriptions for success in two very different styles of practice.

The presentation included a question and answer session, lasting 3 hours with participants questioning Benikov and Ostahowski for information about establishing and maintaining a profitable practice while still maintaining control over the quality of one’s non-professional life.

“Our Solo By Design workshops are just another example of how Cooley educates young attorneys on how to be successful while practicing law,” said Gary Bauer, Cooley professor. “Cooley Law School has always taught students how to be successful while practicing law through a practical hands-on education.”

Benikov and Ostahowski, both only three and four years out of law school, shared their secrets to solo success. Benikov teaches classes in law office management as an adjunct professor, has published two books on going solo and managing clients and practices private criminal defense in a large urban center. Ostahowski has established a practice in a small village of only 2,000 residents, focusing exclusively on estate planning. Each shared their personal experience of going solo in an uncertain economy even though just fresh out of law school.
