Bloomfield Hills proclaims Dec. 2 as Giving Tuesday

At the request of Oakland Mediation Center (OMC), Bloomfield Hills Mayor Michael Dul has proclaimed Tuesday, Dec. 2, Giving Tuesday-Bloomfield Hills Day of Giving. Giving Tuesday is a first of its kind effort that will harness the collective power of a unique blend of partners-charities, families, businesses and individuals-to transform how people think about, talk about and participate in the giving season. Coinciding with the Thanksgiving holiday and the kick-off of the holiday shopping season, Giving Tuesday inspires people to take collaborative action to improve their local communities, give back in better, smarter ways to the charities and causes they support and help create a better world. Taking place Dec. 2 the Tuesday after Thanksgiving Giving Tuesday will harness the power of social media to create a national moment around the holidays dedicated to giving, similar to how Black Friday and Cyber Monday have become days that are, today, synonymous with holiday shopping. Seeing an opportunity to channel the generous spirit of the holiday season to inspire action around charitable giving, OMC was looking at ways to promote and celebrate the great American tradition of giving. "This national movement provides a framework and ideas for people to choose their own way to contribute to their communities and will provide the citizens of Bloomfield Hills with an opportunity to make a difference," said Oakland Mediation Center Executive Director Bonnie Hanes. "It's an honor to have the City of Bloomfield Hills formally proclaim Giving Tuesday as a day of giving," Hanes added. Oakland Mediation Center is a non-profit organization committed to the peaceful resolution of conflict through community mediation and education. Like many other non-profit organizations, Oakland Mediation Center is invested in its community and understands the importance of community support. OMC will be celebrating Giving Tuesday at its Bloomfield Hills office, hosting Community Hero Day on December 2. From noon until 1 p.m. individuals will be treated to lunch, and have a chance to share how they support OMC with attendees and on social media "Giving Tuesday is counter narrative to Black Friday and Cyber Monday because it reminds us that the spirit of the holiday giving season should be about community and not just consumerism," said Kathy Calvin, CEO of the UN Foundation. "The most meaningful gift we can give our children, loved ones, friends and neighbors is the commitment to work together to help build a better world."
