Oakland County Executive L. Brooks Patterson has appointed former state Rep. and House Appropriations Committee Chair Chuck Moss to the Regional Transit Authority (RTA) Governing Board effective immediately. He will serve the remainder of Jean Chamberlain’s term which ends March 12, 2016. Chamberlain has resigned from the RTA.
Moss has an extensive background in transportation.
“Oakland County residents deserve to have the most qualified individuals representing them and serving in government,” Patterson said. “Chuck’s transportation bona fides are outstanding.”
Moss was a member of the Oakland County Public Transit Authority from 1996-2000, chairing the body from 1998-2000. He served on the Birmingham Traffic and Safety Board from 1993-1997. In addition, Moss was on the National League of Cities Transportation & Infrastructure Services Committee. He currently serves on the Oakland County Business Roundtable’s Transportation Committee.
“I’m honored to represent the residents of Oakland County on the RTA board,” Moss said. “I’ll look for solutions to our transit issues that also work for Oakland County.”
This is not Moss’ first time serving in a regional role. He was a board member of the Southeast Michigan Council of Governments (SEMCOG) and a board member of the Michigan Association of Counties (MAC), both from 2002-2006.
Birmingham voters elected Moss to the Oakland County Board of Commissioners in 2000. He served three two-year terms, chairing the county’s Finance Committee from 2003-2006. They also elected him as a Birmingham city commissioner in 1996, a position he held until his election as county commissioner. Moss served as the mayor of Birmingham in 2000.
Moss is a familiar media personality as well. He is a former columnist and freelance writer for The Detroit News and The Oakland Press. He co-hosted “Back to Back” on WTVS-TV (Channel 56). He also was a talk show host on WXYT-AM (1270) and a commentator for WDET-FM (101.9) and National Public Radio.
Moss has a law degree from the University of Detroit-Mercy School of Law and an undergraduate degree from Michigan State University.
