Capitol to get addition to welcome visitors

LANSING (AP) - The Michigan Capitol is getting a welcome center. The agency that manages the building says the $88 million project could start next summer and be completed by 2017. The welcome center will be an entrance for all visitors. It had been proposed decades ago during the last major renovation but never happened. Besides serving as an entrance, the welcome center will have a cafeteria, meeting rooms and areas to learn about the Capitol's history. It opened in Lansing in 1879. In a written statement, former Gov. John Engler says he's glad to hear the project is moving forward. He was in office in 1992 during the last major renovation. Published: Wed, Jan 14, 2015
