Aretha Franklin sang at local King Day event
SOUTHFIELD (AP) - The Queen of Soul has helped mark Martin Luther King Day in suburban Detroit, accompanying herself on piano while singing "Amazing Grace."
Aretha Franklin was a participant in Monday's Peace Walk Celebration in Southfield and performed at the Southfield Pavilion.
She tells WXYZ-TV that "it's because of him" that people have many of the things they enjoy today.
Franklin says she was excited to see so many young people participate in the walk and the ceremony that followed.
She says "they are the generation that is going to have to carry things" when older people leave the scene.
Franklin says she's delighted at the release of the movie "Selma" and says it will let young people know "what the generations before them went through."
