Judge Young to deliver Cohen lecture

Oakland County Circuit Court Judge Joan E. Young will deliver the 30th annual I. Goodman Cohen Lecture in Trial Advocacy on Tuesday, March 10, at Wayne State University Law School.

Young’s lecture, “Oral Advocacy and Pretrial Practice,” will take place from 12:15 to 1:15 p.m. in the Spencer M. Partrich Auditorium at the law school, 471 W. Palmer St. Lunch will be provided. Young, a 1974 alumna of Wayne Law, first was elected Oakland County Probate Court judge in 1988 and served as chief judge of that court from 1994 to 1997. She also served as chief judge of the 52nd District from 1996 to 1997. She was appointed to the Oakland County Circuit Court in 1997 and served as chief judge from 2001 to 2003. She first was assigned to the Circuit Court Family Division in 1998. Young was presiding judge of the Family Division in 2009. She chairs the Family Law Committee of the Michigan Judges Association and serves on the Michigan Supreme Court’s Adoption and Permanency Forum, Permanency Options Workgroup and the Michigan Coalition for Race Equity in Child Welfare.

She has served on many other nonprofit boards and court committees and has been a member of Wayne Law’s Board of Visitors. Young is a frequent lecturer on court reform, juvenile justice reform, financial issues affecting juveniles, and adoption reform.

She has earned many awards for her work and her activism on behalf of women and children, including the Congressional Coalition on Adoption’s Angels in Adoption Award and the Champion for Justice Award from Common Ground Legal Services, the Family Law Assistance Project of Lakeshore Legal Aid, and Thomas M. Cooley Law School. In August, the Michigan Judges Association honored her with the 2014 Hilda R. Gage Award for Judicial Excellence.

Commentators for the lecture will be:

—Dean M. Googasian, Wayne Law class of 1997, of The Googasian Firm PC and a frequent author on Michigan law. His practice includes catastrophic injury, wrongful death, auto injury claims, commercial litigation and consumer class actions in Michigan and across the nation. He is a former special assistant to the assistant attorney general in charge of the Criminal Division of the U.S. Department of Justice.

—Moneka L. Sanford, Wayne Law class of 2003, of the Law Offices of Moneka L. Sanford PLLC. Sanford has a general practice, the majority of which is focused on criminal, family, probate, mental health and Supplemental Security Income appeals.

The I. Goodman Cohen Lecture Series was established by the family of the late I. Goodman Cohen, a prominent trial lawyer in Michigan who was active in the Michigan Trial Lawyers Association, known today as the Michigan Association for justice.
