The Negligence Law Section of the State Bar of Michigan hosted a Summer Reception on Thursday, August 6, at the Birmingham Athletic Club. During the evening, the section honored Oakland County Circuit Court Judge Shalina D. Kumar (front row, center) as its Trial Judge of the Year in appreciation of her continued commitment to amicable resolution of civil disputes and for recognizing the benefit of allowing skilled litigators to exercise their craft in the courtroom. Congratulating Kumar were (front row, left to right) Michael Janes of Martin, Bacon, & Martin PC; Ray Morganti of Siemion Huckabay PC; Jennifer Grieco of Neuman Anderson PC; and Mike Sullivan of Collins, Einhorn, Farrell PC; along with (back row, left to right) Richard Siemion, and Ven Johnson of Johnson Law PLC. “I am very honored to be recognized by the Negligence Law Section of the State Bar,” commented Kumar upon receiving the award. “I respect trial attorneys and the difficulties they can face when practicing in the courtroom. I hope that I provide a fair and pleasant environment for them.” Kumar was an associate of the Southfield based law firm of Weiner &?Cox PLC specializing in complex civil litigation, medical malpractice, and wrongful death actions. Appointed to the bench in 2007, Kumar was re-elected in 2014 for a six-year term. During her time on the bench, she has served as chief circuit judge pro tem from 2010-2013. She is a graduate of the University of Michigan and the University of Detroit Mercy School of Law.
