Pontiac residents will have improved access to physical fitness programs thanks to the Oakland County Health Division being awarded a one-year grant from the state of Michigan, County Executive L. Brooks Patterson announced last Thursday.
The $62,641 grant will enable the Healthy Pontiac, We Can! Coalition and the Health Division to support:
• Launching programs for the Oakland County Sheriff PAL (Police Athletic League) in Pontiac which will bring youth sports and recreation leagues to the city.
• Developing partnerships with churches, schools, parks and other community spaces that can be used as sites for physical activity.
• Expanding community-based programs which incorporate physical activity opportunities with peers such as walking clubs, youth sports, and group exercise classes.
“By creating more opportunities to live a healthier, more active lifestyle, we can improve the quality of life for Pontiac residents,” Patterson said. “Thanks to the Health Division and our partners, there will be plenty of physical fitness options in Pontiac.”
Key partners include Oakland County Sheriff PAL Program, All Saints’ Episcopal Church, Woodside Bible Church, Oakland University, Greater Pontiac Community Coalition, Centro Multicultural La Familia, city
of Pontiac, and Pontiac Downtown Business Association.
Oakland County was one of only seven local organizations to receive grant funding from Gov. Rick Snyder’s Michigan Health and Wellness 4x4 Plan.
Oakland County Executive L. Brooks Patterson supports and promotes initiatives, organizations and events that improve quality of life through healthier and more active lifestyles. The county’s Health Division formed the Healthy Pontiac, We Can! coalition in 2011 to help Pontiac residents gain access to healthy food, become active, and live tobacco free. The coalition includes a diverse group of primary and preventative healthcare professionals, mental health experts, human service agency specialists, educators, clergy, government leaders, and local residents.
