Michigan Gov. Rick Snyder last Friday announced the appointment of Julie Secontine, the Oakland County risk manager, as state fire marshal.
“Julie Secontine brings a wealth of experience and leadership to this important and critical position,” Snyder said. “Her reputation and involvement with fire safety departments across Michigan will be a tremendous asset in protecting all Michiganders.”
Secontine, of Rochester Hills, also was named director of the Michigan Bureau of Fire Services by Mike Zimmer, director of the Michigan Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs (LARA). The bureau serves about 31,000 firefighters in Michigan.
She will oversee fire safety code adoption and enforcement, fire fighter training, Michigan Fireworks Safety Act, fire incident data reporting and analysis, regulation of aboveground and underground storage tanks, hazardous materials incident responses and public education.
Secontine has served as an attorney and the risk manager for Oakland County since 2003. She was previously senior assistant corporation counselor for the county and worked as a staff attorney to Chief Judge Barry L. Howard in the Oakland County Circuit Court. She has taught at Cooley Law School, Eastern Michigan University, Madonna University, and Oakland Community College.
Secontine was appointed to the Public Safety Communications Interoperability board by Gov. Snyder in 2013, and reappointed to the board in 2015. She received a bachelor’s degree in political science from Michigan State University and a law degree from Wayne State University Law School.
She replaces Acting State Fire Marshal Mike Deprez.
