PONTIAC (AP) - Pontiac Mayor Deirdre Waterman and the city council will have full authority over the city after years of state oversight.
State Treasurer Nick Khouri signed amendments last Thursday to two existing emergency manager orders that return authority to local city leaders, which Gov. Rick Snyder calls an "important day for the people of Pontiac" in a statement.
The move comes after a state-appointed advisory board recommended to the state Treasury Department that elected city officials regain control.
In 2013, Gov. Rick Snyder terminated former Pontiac emergency manager Louis Schimmel's contract after Schimmel informed Snyder the city had resolved its financial emergency and recommended Snyder appoint the transition advisory board which a state press release says will only meet "as needed."
