On Tuesday, Michigan Gov. Rick Snyder announced a primary election will be held on Aug. 2, 2016, and a general election on Nov. 8, 2016, to ensure the Senate seat vacated by former state Sen. Virgil Smith Jr. will be filled promptly while minimizing costs to local communities and taxpayers.
"This ensures the people of the 4th Senate District are given the opportunity to select the representation they need in the Legislature as soon as possible without the burden of additional expense for the community," Snyder said.
Smith, from Detroit, submitted a letter of resignation from his 4th District Senate seat effective April 12.
Candidates who wish to be placed on the Aug. 2 primary ballot must file by Tuesday, May 10, at 4 p.m. For specific dates and filing deadlines related to each seat, visit the Secretary of State's Elections website, www.michigan.gov/sos.
