Oakland County’s top information technology official is Michigan’s IT Leader of the Year, County Executive L. Brooks Patterson announced Monday. Deputy County Executive and CIO Phil Bertolini garnered this coveted award at the Michigan Digital Government Summit last week at the Lansing Center in Lansing. It comes on the heels of Oakland County’s chief information security officer being named IT Professional of the Year.
“If one wonders why Oakland County is consistently ranked among the most digitally advanced counties in the United States, just look at our leadership team at IT,” Patterson said. “We are among the best in government IT, sharing our innovations with other governments in the cloud, because Phil and his team keep us on the leading edge of developments.”
Bertolini, who gave the opening presentation on the second day of the summit on the mission, goals, and passion of government and also moderated a panel on the future workforce, said the recognition was unexpected.
“They surprised me when they named me Michigan’s IT Leader of the Year,” Bertolini said. “But Oakland County’s IT Department would not be able to achieve all it has without the unwavering support and vision of our county executive.”
Bertolini has served as deputy county executive and CIO since January of 2005. He joined the county in 1988. He became director of IT in 2001. He earned his Bachelor of Arts degree in telecommunication from Michigan State University in 1985.
The Michigan Digital Government Summit is designed to spread best practices and spur innovation in the public sector. The summit has an advisory board that gathers public sector and private sector leaders to create an agenda designed to make that passion relevant and actionable to the state and local government organizations attending the summit.
In September, Michigan Government Management Information Sciences bestowed the IT Professional of the Year Award on Oakland County’s Chief Information Security Officer Chris Burrows. That award recognizes outstanding individuals who advance and support the use of technology within government to improve efficiency and customer service.
