International tax havens examined

The International Law Section of the State Bar of Michigan conducted a council meeting and program on Wednesday, Jan. 18, at the Wayne State University Spencer M. Partrich Auditorium in Detroit. “International Tax Havens: Whither or Wither?,” sponsored jointly with the Tax Law Section, featured former U.S. Senator Carl Levin (fifth from right). Also taking part in the program were (left to right)  Carolee Smith of CMS Energy, Troy Harris of Harris Arbitration, Debbie Auerbach Clephane of The Murray Law Group; Ryan Peruski, Lara Phillip, and James Combs of Honigman, Miller, Schwartz, & Cohn LLP; Jackie Cook of CMS Energy; Alex Domenicucci of Seyburn Kahn PC; and James Rayis of Giarmarco, Mullins, & Horton PC.  Levin stated, “I’m going to be talking about the way in which tax havens have been used to avoid paying taxes and the efforts which are being made now to end the abuses which have resulted from the use of tax havens—like the Cayman Islands, for instance, where a whole bunch of companies, very profitable companies, have set up their own subsidiaries—transferred intellectual property to themselves, effectively—and avoided paying taxes to Uncle Sam.  That’s not fair to the taxpayers of the United States and it’s not fair to their competitors.”
